Ultrasound Guided Foam Sclerotherapy Sessions
All EVLT treatments are performed as a walk-in walkout day case procedure. Using ultrasound guidance, between 4 and 5 small cannulas are placed in the main vein. A small amount of local anaesthetic helps makes this almost painless. Any visible varicose veins are accessed with small butterfly needles. It takes 5 minutes to inject foam into the veins before compression stockings are applied. These are worn for 1 to 2 weeks. Normal activity can be resumed immediately after treatment.
How does foam work?
The foam sclerosant is a mild irritant that dissolves the non-stick lining on the inside of the vein wall. Veins cannot survive without this and they die off and disappear over the next 4-6 weeks. Foam is active for a few minutes only, then quickly breaks down into substances that are naturally present in the body.
