Treatment options will be discussed after a detailed assessment of your varicose veins and a personalised treatment plan agreed with you.
National guidelines recommend keyhole management for the vast majority of varicose vein patients. Thermal ablation with either laser (EVLT) or radio-frequency ablation (RFA) is the gold standard in management. Varicose veins in both legs can be treated at a single visit and the procedure takes less than an hour to carry out.
Foam sclerotherapy is an ideal solution for patients in whom laser ablation will not work. Usually, varicose veins in one leg will be treated at each session and the procedure takes around half an hour to carry out.
Both procedures are carried out under local anaesthetic as an out-patient and full return to normal activity is expected immediately afterwards. Other key-hole options are also available but are only required in a very small number of patients.
I never recommend surgical options for the treatment of varicose veins.
